    Dear all,

Margaret May proposed a coding for adherence data (self-reported as well as based on prescription refill). I forward the document on her behalf:

Please see attached discussion document which details the current data ART-CC have received on adherence. We think including prescription refill data in HICDEP would not be problematical. However, self - report adherence questionnaires are not standardised. So far we have not had sufficient opportunity to see whether one method is better than the others. On the basis of Tracy Glass' work we could recommend that cohorts who want to collect adherence data in Europe should follow the SHCS model. The other strong contender for standardisation is the Washington model as this has been adopted across the CNICS cohorts.

Please have a look at the documents and share your comments!

    Kind regards,

    Simon

Just to keep record, here's an email from Margaret May regarding this topic:

Thanks for the presentation - very interesting findings on the cognitive appreciation of questions and processing of answers. So we could recommend the 3 "best" items at the end of the presentation:

    1) In the last 30 days, on how many days did you miss at least one dose of any of your HIV medicine?

Write in number of days: (0-30)

    2) In the last 30 days, how good a job did you do at taking your HIV medicines in the way you were supposed to?

    Very poor
    Poor
    Fair
    Good
    Very good
    Excellent

    3) In the last 30 days, how often did you take your HIV medicines in the way you were supposed to?

    Never
    Rarely
    Sometimes
    Usually
    Almost always
    Always

This would certainly have the benefit of simplicity.

    Dear all,

Just a point to add about what to recommend with regard to self-report adherence questions. I was just at an adherence conference last week and there is no consensus, but what recommendations are given support questions asking about the past 30 days. I have included the presentation from the meeting and highlighted the relevant parts. Also, I have highlighted the corresponding optimal questions in Margaret's document according to these recommendations.

If you have further questions, please just let me know.

    Kind regards, Tracy
