tblBAS - Basic clinical, background and demographic information

The current Ethnicity variable is catered to an American audience. COHERE and CASCADE both agree this variable should be re-evaluated and re-formatted so it can be universal. Additionally, CASCADE does not collect Ethnicity in this way, as it is not relevant to our cohorts. We suggest there to be a further discussion on Ethnicity and to invite relevant individuals to this discussion. Please suggest individuals who can add value to a more universal Ethnicity variable.

The current Ethnicity variable is as follows:

    ETHNIC field

    containing table
    tblBAS
    explanation of variable
    Ethnicity of patient
    format of data
numeric. see coding table for valid codings.
    exists since HICDEP version
    1.30

    Coding Table

save Download this table as CSV filesave Download this table as XML file
    Code Ethnicity of patient
    10 White
    20 Black
    21 Black African
    22 Black Caribbean
    30 Hispanic
    40 Asian
    50 Americas
    60 Indigenous
    1020 1+2
    1040 1+4
    2030 2+3
    3040 3+4
    98 Prohibited
    99 Unknown

As brought up by Sara Lodi in a previous discussion, we need to be consistent with the way we collect how individuals seroconverted (if they are seroconverters). COHERE uses a variable called SEROCO_M, and CASCADE uses the variable SEROHOW. It was agreed by COHERE and CASCADE that we would collect it as in CASCADE. We suggest this to be added as an additional field to tblBAS.

    Additional fields

    Field name

    Format

    Description

    SEROHOW

    numeric:

    • 1 = Midpoint between last neg/first pos test
    • 2 = Lab evidence of seroconversion
    • 3 = Seroconversion illness
    • 4 = Other
    • 9 = Unknown

how was the seroconversion date determined?

CASCADE currently collects 'national' in the Origin variable of tblBAS which comprises of 62% of our response for this variable. Our cohorts, for the most part, are from single countries, so we propose to add country codes to Origin so our current 'national' variable can be more readily used. The following additions apply to CASCADE and are coded starting from 100; however, we should discuss adding in all European countries to this field.

    ORIGIN field

    containing table
    tblBAS
    explanation of variable
Nationality or region of origin of patient
    format of data
character (1-3 letter/numeric codes). see coding table for valid codings.
    exists since HICDEP version
    1.30

    10 Africa
    11 Northern Africa
    12 Sub-Saharan Africa

    50 Americas

    52 Central & South America
    60 Middle East

A quick update on the Origin field:

It has been proposed to use the UN codes for country http://unstats.un.org/uns...ods/m49/m49alpha.htm and region http://unstats.un.org/uns...ds/m49/m49regin.htm.

COHERE and CASCADE would also propose to add the variable CENS_D - date of administrative censoring - to the HICDEP version 1.60. The date of administrative censoring would be the last date the database has been updated for a specific patient. We suggest this to be added as an additional field to tblBAS.

    I would support that suggestion.
