    Dear all
We propose to redesign tblBAS field ETHNIC, as it is viewed as no longer reflecting how etnicity is viewed upon and worked with.
We would like to change the coding to three characters, shown in the attached table to the left (the existing code is shown to the right under Old Code).
In order to ensure backwards compabatability we have included all previous options and as far as possible we have tried to link the new and old codes.

We also had a request for adding aborigines. Any suggestions on how to include this group?
Is it genetically diverse enough that it should be further sub-divided?

Please note that this suggestion is an attempt to update the etnicity table, whilst maintaining backwards compability. As such it does not reflect our view upon etnicity, rather it is a compromise between compability and how we think it should look.

    Any comments or suggestions?

    Kind regards
    Pernille

We are currently only storing the country of origin and the nationality for each patient, so we would not yet be able to add any data to the suggested new field. Nevertheless, adding this field seems like a good idea.

This is a tricky variable and I don't have any data-driven insights as we don't collect this information in IeDEA.

For code 300 (Hispanic/Latino/Latin American), I might remove Latin American as this just means from Mexico or Central/South America. There are many Black Latin Americans and I'm not sure what code they would pick. Also I think Latino is being more frequently written as Latinx in our field in order to be gender neutral (broader than Latino/Latina).

"Philippino" should be "Filipino". I'm not sure if "Filipinx" is a word like Latinx?

Someone with more experience than I will surely have better insights!
